Education & Career

Born in Chania, Crete, he completed his studies at the Medical School of the University of Crete. After completing his military service and field service (rural), he specialized in General Surgery at the Athens General Hospital "Evangelismos", in the 1st Surgical Department & Organ Transplantation Unit.

During and after his specialization, he developed a high level of expertise in the following areas:

  • Colon & rectal cancer
  • Inflammatory bowel diseases (ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease)
  • Bowel movement disorders (constipation, incontinence)
  • Diseases of the anus (hemorrhoids, stretch marks, fistulas)
  • Laparoscopic and minimally invasive colon surgery
  • Transsphincteric surgery without colostomy

Pioneer in Orthopedic Surgery - International First

Dr. Ioannis Bolanis is one of the few surgeons in Greece who perform transsphincteric resection for rectal cancer at a distance of up to 1 cm from the sphincter, without requiring a permanent colostomy.

In fact, he was the first in Greece and one of the first internationally to apply the pull-through delayed anastomosis method. With it, both the temporary and the permanent unnatural seat (colostomy) in rectal cancer are definitively avoided. This innovative technique has been published in English by the Hellenic Surgical Society and is considered a benchmark in modern rectal surgery.

International Specialization

He has been trained and retrained in leading centers abroad:

  • Strasbourg (France): NOTES, Advanced Laparoscopy – IRCAD
  • Pisa (Italy): MIVAT/MIVAP (Endoscopic Thyroidectomy)
  • Hamburg (Germany): Minimally invasive techniques
  • Greece & Europe: Laparoscopic surgery of the stomach, obesity, colon and liver

He holds the Diplôme D’Université de Chirurgie Laparoscopique (IRCAD, France) and certification for minimally invasive treatment of hemorrhoids with ultrasound (THD).

Intestinal and Rectal Diseases Clinic

The Clinic for General & Laparoscopic Surgery of the Intestine and Anus was created with the aim of providing a high level of specialized services to patients with problems of the gastrointestinal system – that is, the small intestine, large intestine and anus.

Specialized operations performed at the Clinic:

  • Avoidance of colostomy (despite the nature of the seat) in patients with rectal cancer close to the sphincter (up to 1–2 cm): Among the first internationally, we developed and implemented the pull-through delayed anastomosis method, which allows avoiding even a temporary stoma, offering quality of life to patients.
  • Specialized operations in inflammatory and genetic diseases of the colon: – Total colectomy and J-Pouch type anastomosis for ulcerative colitis and familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). – Sphincter reconstruction in cases of faecal incontinence from injury or degenerative damage.
  • Treatment of diseases of the anus with modern minimally invasive techniques: – Haemorrhoids (THD, LHP® techniques, etc.) – Ring fissure – Peripheral fistulae – Coccyx cyst (EPSiT, FiLaC® methods, etc.) – Warts and other proctological diseases
  • Comprehensive general surgery services with laparoscopic and open techniques: – Hernias (inguinal hernia, umbilical hernia, postoperative hernia) – Cholecystectomy (bile) – Appendicectomy – Cysts, lipomas and other soft tissue operations
